Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

AGILITY WORKSHOP

In September 2012 OT Fitness was contacted by Kristen Matthews, CP © Certified Prosthesis for Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. She was looking for programs that will better able their kids to feel more comfortable while participating in physical activities.

OT Fitness took the challenge and created and adapted the Fun In Athletes equipment and programs to suit all different amputees and abilities. We first did a training session with the staff of Holland Bloorview showing them what we do and allowed the staff to have input on the different activities we would offer their kids.

The true test was on November 24, 2012 at Varity Village, We offered several different events with each station adaptable for all possible amputee or affliction.  relays, running over obstacles, throwing Objects, and balancing. At the end of the 3 hr workshop, all participants had a wonderful time. The suprising findings were that specialist that made and adapted the prosthetics’ was amazed at how the different amputees would maneuver their prophetics while using our Fun In Athletics equipments.

With the pilot session a full success OT Fitness was again employed to offer the workshop this time it was hosted in partnership with the Milos Raonic Foundation on April 6, 2013. The turnout was fantastic with over 20 children, parents and siblings.

On July 19, 2013 OT Fitness was again requested to for the 3rd. Agility Workshop. This time we were honored to have Milos Raonic himself participate with the children and along with a slew of media. A great time was had by all. It was also announced that Holland Bloorview was given an added $25,000 to continue this fantastic Agility Workshop.

“Milt and his team integrated children who rely on prosthetic and orthotic devices into physical activity.  His team has provided a wide range of fun activities modified to each child’s abilities.  Our kids have a wonderful time at every clinic, and always come away exhausted and beaming”.  Kristen Matthews, CP (c) Certified Prosthetist
