2013 World Marathon Challenge

The day started off with 1 team arriving 20 minutes late due to a transportation delay and the team t-shirts didn’t arrive until after the start of the race but the OT Fitness team adapted and pushed on to make the event a great success. The students were enthusiastic and full of energy throughout the  42.19 Km. race.

In the end we had Team Lawfield finishing 1st in Canada with a time of  2:09, placed 45 out of 611 teams. Team Sir Samuel Hearn was 2nd with a time of  2:34, placed 167 out of 611 teams.

The team with the best time of the challenge over all was Team Thomas Tallwis (London UK) with a time of  1:51.

On behalf of Save The Children Canada and OT Fitness Educational Services Inc. We are proud to be have hosted this amazing ground breaking International children’s event “The World Marathon Challenge.”

Now in its 6th year, the World Marathon Challenge is a relay event for teams of 34 school children (16 boys + 2 Alternate and 16 girls + 2 Alternate) who race other teams at different venues around the world whilst attempting to beat the world marathon record.  In 2012 under the Save the Children banner we had 50 countries fielding over 450 teams participating worldwide.

The World Marathon Challenge is a relay event for teams of between 26 and 36 children who race other teams at different venues around the world over a full marathon distance (42.195km), while attempting to beat the world marathon record time of 2h3m38s, held by Kenya’s Patrick Makau.

The 2013 date for this event is scheduled for October 23rd. We are expecting 3-4 teams of 18 Boys and 18 Girls under the age of 13 from Toronto and Hamilton –London to participate at York University Track to compete against the world. Each student will be given a number from 1 to 32. Each student will run a total of 6 x 200m in a relay format until the marathon distance is completed.

This event as is with all the OT Fitness events promote teamwork fun fitness activities and give students an insight of what it take 32 of them to do 1 individual has done.

GENERAL - EVENT INFORMATION
Distances and Relay Format

The marathon distance of 42.195 kilometres is divided into 210 x 200m sections plus
a 195m section which is run to start the relay. Each team will carry a baton which
must complete the full race distance. If a baton is dropped it must be picked up by
the runner who dropped it. The baton must be passed on hand to hand and not
thrown at anytime.

Venue (Metro Toronto York University Indoor Track  4700 Keele Street, Toronto, Ontario M3J   he world Marathon Challenge was a great success. With 611 teams from around the world participating, Canada had 2 teams from the GTA participating in this world event.  Lawfield Elementary School (Hamilton District School Board) and Sir Samuel Hearn Middle school (Toronto District School board).
