The World Marathon Challenge

Now in its 7th year, the World Marathon Challenge (WMC) is a relay event for teams of 34 school children (16 boys + 2 Alternate and 16 girls + 2 Alternate) who race other school teams at different venues around the world over a full marathon distance (42.195km), all attempting to beat the world marathon record time of 2h3m38s, held by Kenya’s Patrick Makau.   In 2013 under the Save the Children banner we had 50 countries fielding over 450 teams participating worldwide.

This year we will be hosting the event at Lawfield Elementary School in Hamilton on October 1st on the outside field at Lawfield School.  Teams from Lawfield School and Highview School from the Hamilton area will be participate against students in other parts of the world.  Each student will wear a number from 1 to 32 and they will each run a total of 6 x 200m in a relay format until the marathon distance is completed.

This event, in accordance with all OT Fitness events, promotes teamwork in fun fitness activities and gives students an insight of the incredible effort it took for 1 individual to accomplish what it takes 32 of them to do.

EVENT INFORMATION

The marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers is divided into 210 x 200m sections plus a 195m section which is run to start the relay. Each team will carry a baton which must complete the full race distance. If a baton is dropped it must be picked up by the runner who dropped it. The baton must be passed on hand to hand and not thrown at any time (Take-over relay boxes will not be used).
